Her father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. Her family raised her by their parents in Wheaton located in Illinois and graduated in 1981 with a diploma from Wheaton-North High School. The model appeared in commercials for a time before moving out in Los Angeles. O'Grady made her debut in the industry by modeling at Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She played a role in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring character in ABC comedy China Beach, opposite Dana Delany.
